Building Number Twelve Al Kamel Mohammed | IMANE IBRAHIM
Ibrahim’s paintings, with their vibrant color schemes and uncanny depictions, are a polite retaliation to the impulses of theorization and categorization dominating contemporary art discourse. The figures are subversive attempts at tradition, stemming from studies and drawings that trace the evolving student’s relationship to the human figure. The series is at once a ironic deception and an amused vindication; the romanticized depictions are the light at the end of a long and obstacle-laden tunnel. Years of the artist’s material experimentations, ideological oscillations, blocks, and battles (both external and internal) culminate in an encrypted meditation on love, freedom, and human nature. After consecutive periods of educational training - both governmental and independent - the artist has mastered the course of her own process of production. As a result, the works are deeply affective, fodder for the curious observer, and a triumph for those who hold a stake in the exoneration of an outmoded medium: paint.
