SAWA 'Pizza Art' exhibition and sale

SAWA has the pleasure of inviting you to 'Pizza Art;’ a one-off exhibition of SAWA artworks held from 12-14th April in the Townhouse Factory space. 'Pizza Art' is a unique exhibition of works produced by local upcoming artists during an intensive workshop led by the acclaimed painter Ibrahim El Tanbouli.

Over the past five weeks, the Pizza Art workshop has aimed to encourage creative and artistic freedom and inspire the participants to discover their hidden talents. Based on social cohesion and the appreciation of others, the collaborative nature of the workshop meant that all participants originally worked together on one large canvas before dividing the piece into smaller sections for individual work. Along the way, the artists learnt new techniques in oil painting from workshop leader El Tanbouli, and acquired important skills in studying and analysing works of art. This critical approach helped to inspire stand alone pieces that truly speak for themselves.

Since its establishment in 2005, SAWA has sought to serve the needs of the community and has expanded quickly from a workshop for Sudanese refugees in Egypt to a weekly series of free technical and artistic workshops attended by other refugee communities (such as Syrians and Iraqis) and marginalised groups. SAWA provides a free open space for expression amidst ever increasing restrictions and helps participants acquire concrete skills that later help them to pursue careers. The SAWA programme now reaches over 1000 individuals from more than 25 nationalities, many of whom have become successful professionals in the arts after their participation in SAWA workshops. 

The Pizza Art exhibition will showcase the work of these talented participants and present a remarkable opportunity to purchase the pieces at highly affordable prices, whilst simultaneously helping the communities who need it most. All proceeds raised from the sale of the artworks will go directly to the SAWA programme ensuring that this vital space can continue to offer much needed opportunities to even more aspiring artists. 

The exhibition will open at 18:00 on Saturday 12 April and will last for three days.

Ibrahim El Tanbouli is an acclaimed painter, sculptor and photographer from Alexandria. His works centre around his perceptions of traditional Egyptian life and have been exhibited internationally including Germany, Italy, Denmark, Tunisia, Britain, United States of America, Egypt and others.
